Installation & Maintenance of Rainwater Management Systems

Rainwater management systems are an essential component of sustainable infrastructure. The aim is to efficiently collect, clean, drain or infiltrate rainwater – ideally in the long term and sustainably.

There are a few things to bear in mind when it comes to installation. This page provides you with helpful tips and information on planning, installation on site, operation and maintenance.

This must be observed before installation

In order to ensure the long-term and sustainable functionality of rainwater management systems, the installation should already be considered when selecting the system.

The project-specific requirements are first analysed, suitable rainwater management systems are selected based on the required load class and hydraulic performance calculation, and the integration into existing infrastructures is ensured.

Helpful documents in this phase are installation advice and installation examples.

Installation advice, installation examples and where to find them

Our installation advice and installation examples are general recommendations based on many years of experience and research. Local conditions, regulations and guidelines must be considered during installation.

You can find the installation advice and installation examples directly on the respective product detail page under installation details. You can find an example of the FASERFIX SUPER 100 here.

How the installation works

Correct installation is crucial to ensure optimum and long-term functionality of the systems. On the HAURATON YouTube channel you will find numerous installation & processing videos with helpful tips.

Three maintenance tips for rainwater management systems

Maintenance ensures that the systems work efficiently even in changing weather conditions and long-term use. In addition to general instructions, we also provide further recommendations for specific climatic conditions.

General information

To ensure a high hydraulic performance, a permanently unobstructed drainage cross-section is necessary. Regular care and maintenance of drainage systems is therefore essential. Dirt and other debris (e.g. cigarette butts, stones in the grating) should be detected and removed.

HAURATON recommends checking and maintaining drainage systems at least once a calendar year – preferably after the winter months – along the entire length of the channel. The frequency depends above all on the load, load frequency and local conditions (e.g. use of de-icing salt, sweeping, ingress of solid materials).

Maintenance includes:

    • Is there any mechanical damage?
    • Are there blockages due to dirt?
    • Are all screw and locking mechanism connections properly fixed? (if available)
    • Ductile iron gratings may show signs of corrosion, which has no effect on the function of the system
    • Sweep away coarse dirt and solids with a broom
    • Thoroughly clean the openings of the gratings (e.g. with a high-pressure cleaner)
    • Small stones can be removed with a screwdriver, for example, without damaging the gratings
    • Is there a large amount of dirt in the channel base or in the silt bucket?
    • How high is the dirt ingress? (Can be determined with a folding rule)
    • For gratings with a narrow opening, we recommend removing them for visual inspection
    • Monolithic systems, SLOTTED CHANNELS, rainwater tanks or infiltration blocks can be inspected with an inspection camera
    • Always clean from the drainage channel to the sump unit
    • The grating must be removed beforehand, taking into account the type of fastening
    • For light dirt, cleaning can be done with a broom
    • Stubborn dirt can be removed with a high-pressure cleaner (max. 120 bar) along the entire length of the channel run
    • Drainage points of the sump unit must be cleaned, as must the silt bucket
    • Before the gratings are refitted, the edge frames and grating support surfaces must be checked and cleaned if necessary
    • Check adjacent surfaces such as paving, concrete or asphalt for damage
    • Does the rainwater management system have a permanent elevation of 3-5 mm?

Tips for dry climatic conditions

Visualisierung Dürreperioden

In some regions of the world, such as the Middle East, there are months with very little rainfall.

Rainwater management systems are not sufficiently flushed with water or filled completely with water often enough when they are used for retention.

In these cases, HAURATON recommends checking the system regularly throughout the year for the degree of sediment accumulation and flushing with water if necessary.

Tips for cold climatic conditions

In cold climates, temperatures can reach well below freezing. Under such conditions, de-icing solutions should be used to keep the rainwater management systems free of snow and ice. When choosing a de-icing agent, please follow our recommendation.

After heavy snowfall, the pavement surfaces should be cleared of snow using suitable equipment. A visual inspection along the entire length of the channel system should be carried out regularly to ensure that the gratings with narrow openings (perforated grating, mesh grating, slotted gratings) are not blocked by snow and ice. If localised blockages occur, these should be removed using suitable tools and equipment.

Filtersubstratrinne DRAINFIX CLEAN zur Regenwasserbehandlung

Special case: Maintenance of DRAINFIX CLEAN

The DRAINFIX CLEAN filter substrate channel requires special maintenance compared to normal drainage systems. This is rarely necessary, but should be carried out professionally to ensure that the cleaning performance is maintained.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

  • Installation examples can be found on the respective product detail pages, e.g. here for item 26000.

  • Installation advice can also be found directly under the product, on the so-called product detail pages, e.g. here for item 26000.

  • We show you how to install the SLOTTED CHANNELS in this video.

  • A superficial visual inspection can be carried out with the naked eye. Superficial, light debris (e.g. cigarette butts) can be removed with a broom. You should use an inspection camera to visually check for any sediment in the channel base and, if necessary, flush the channel run in the direction of the sump unit.

  • For project-specific installation examples or if you need assistance with integrating into your project, feel free to contact us via our contact form.

  • HAURATON drainage channels can be shortened to length as required. This does not affect the stability. When shortening, however, it must be ensured that the fixing points (screws/SIDE-LOCK springs/locking mechanism) for the gratings are retained.
