Comprehensive rainwater management for sports facilities

Sports facilities place the highest demands on functionality, durability and safety – both for athletes and operators. Whether it’s an artificial turf pitch, an athletics facility or a stadium environment, every surface presents individual challenges for the planning and implementation of comprehensive rainwater management.

Robust, low-maintenance surfaces, increasing sealing and more frequent heavy rainfall events make it necessary not only to drain water quickly, but also to treat it in a targeted manner, allow it to seep away locally or retain it and use it for irrigation (watering), for example.

What is important in rainwater management at sports facilities

Comprehensive rainwater management means keeping an eye on all functions: fast and safe drainage, cleaning of contaminated surface water, targeted retention to relieve the sewer system, and on-site infiltration – for example, in combination with infiltration basins or underground storage elements. For modern sports facilities, this results in flexible requirements for the systems used – depending on the type of surface, use and load.

Requirements for different sports surfaces

Depending on the type of surface, sports facilities have different requirements for rainwater management. The following areas show what needs to be taken into account in particular when it comes to drainage, treatment, infiltration, retention and additional functions such as the routing of power or data cables.

Artificial turf pitches

Football pitches, hockey pitches and multi-purpose fields with synthetic surfaces have special requirements. The surface structure is water-permeable, but microplastics from granules, blade abrasion or fine particles from tartan surfaces can be washed out with the rainwater. An integrated system for drainage and rainwater treatment helps to retain these substances and minimise their discharge into the environment. At the same time, the rainwater management system used must be permanently efficient and mechanically resilient – especially with intensive sporting use and frequent cleaning of the playing surfaces.

Athletics facilities

Whether running tracks, long jump pits or throwing areas – rainwater management must function particularly extensively, quickly and safely here. Water must not accumulate or cause slippery areas. Channels and associated components of the rainwater management system must be integrated in such a way that they do not wash away or damage the elastic plastic surfaces – and at the same time are barrier-free and permanently slip-resistant. For competition-ready facilities, additional requirements apply according to World Athletics (WA), for example with regard to the installation height and drainage capacity of channels and gratings.

Stadium surroundings and adjacent areas

Access routes, grandstand areas, entrances, squares and parking areas in the vicinity of stadiums and sports facilities are heavily frequented and used for a variety of purposes – whether by athletes, spectators or service personnel. This calls for a rainwater management system that can be integrated into the design and is also highly efficient, barrier-free and visually integrated.

In parking areas, rainwater treatment with systems such as DRAINFIX CLEAN BASIC can also be useful – for example, to retain pollutants from contaminated surface water and then allow for controlled infiltration or use.

In addition, solutions for the safe, underground routing of supply and information lines – for example, for electricity, IT or media technology – are also coming into focus for regular event operations.
